Official inauguration of the Gaudí International Year

Today, 20th March 2002, the Saló de Cent of Barcelona Town Council has held the academic inauguration ceremony of the Gaudí International Year. Queen Sofía, President of Honour of the Gaudí International Year, opened the event.

The architects Oriol Bohigas, Lord Norman Foster and Arata Isozaki then explained their personal vision of the work and figure of Antoni Gaudí. The following institutional representatives also participated: Luis Alberto de Cuenca, State Secretary of Culture; Joan Clos, Mayor of Barcelona; and Jordi Pujol, President of the Autonomous Government of Catalonia. The Queen concluded the function by declaring the Gaudí International Year officially open.

The official inauguration brought together more than 350 people linked to the commission of the commemoration of the 150th anniversary of Antoni Gaudí's birth as well as people from the cultural world of Barcelona, Catalonia and Spain. The guests next attended the Saló del Tinell of the City History Museum where the exhibition Gaudí. Exploring form was opened.
