Gaudí. El musical de Barcelona

The first performance of the show Gaudí. El musical de Barcelona ?one of the most anticipated theatre events of the season? took place on 24 September at the Barcelona Teatre Musical (Palau dels Esports de Montjuïc). The show brings to the stage the life of Gaudí, the son of a coppersmith, who became one of the greatest 20th century architects.

It is a full scale musical, with a cast of 28 actors, 18 live musicians and 32 light and sound technicians. With music by Albert Guinovart and the libretto by Jordi Galceran and Esteve Miralles, the dramaturgy advisors are Calixto Bieito and Sergi Belbel and it is directed by José Antonio Gutiérrez and Elisa Crehuet. The stage design is by Franc Fernández and Enric Ruiz, the musical direction by Francesc Guillén and the costumes are the work of María Araujo.

Spectacular and striking, this musical explores the mystery of the spaces created by the architect, his dreams as a young man, his one and only love, his years as a student in Barcelona and his dazzling career particularly distinguished by his relationship with Count Güell, the commission of the Sagrada Família, his moments of glory and his gradual mystical retreat. As a background, the city of Barcelona immersed in a convulsed and fascinating historical time.

The show ?a co-production of FOCUS, CIE España and IBERAUTOR? is presented in Catalan (with English and Spanish subtitles). It has already sold 19,000 tickets and will run until 6th January 2003.
