Ayuntamiento de León has brought together the efforts
of other local, provincial, and regional institutions such
as the Ayuntamiento de Astorga, the Universidad de León,
the Diputación Provincial, the Junta de Castilla y
León, the Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos de León,
as well as the contributions of various artists and professionals
from the provinces cultural areas, in order to join
in the commemoration of the 150th anniversary of Gaudís
With this spirit, the program León Gaudí 2002
seeks to contribute a lively, eloquent project with the creativity
belonging to the environment of León. For this purpose,
dreaming has been chosen as a poetic reference, a metaphor
drawing together the homage to the figure of Gaudí,
summarized by the title Dreaming in Stone.
Among the proposals developed, the following stand out:
The publishing of the book Soñando en Piedra (Dreaming
in Stone), a compilation of new texts and photographs, reflecting
on the two buildings that Gaudí designed in León
the Episcopal Palace of Astorga and Casa Botines. The
authors of the texts are Antonio Gamoneda, Manuel Arias, María
Jesús Alonso Gavela, Antoni González Moreno-Navarro,
Bernardino González, and Manuel Carriedo. The photographs
are by Andrés Edo, Blanca Giganto, Manuel Tejada López,
Rafael García Salas, Santiago Santos Vega, and Amando
(The presentation of this book, on April 18th in Astorga and
León, along with the showing of the film Gaudí,
by Manuel Huerga, will be the inaugural act of the program
León Gaudí 2002).
The Feria del Libro (Book Fair) of León will make special
reference to the figure of Gaudí, dedicating a special
stand at the fair and various activities to him (end of April,
Production of an audiovisual project about both buildings,
under the auspices of the Colegio de Arquitectos de León
(simultaneously projected in Astorga and León in October,
Melquiades Ranilla is the coordinator of the project; production
by Chus Domínguez with the collaboration of the Escuela
de Cinematografía de Ponferrada. The advisors are Mariano
Díez Sáenz de Miera, Félix Compadre,
and Ramón Cañas.

La mujer de arena (The Sand Woman) is a modern dance piece,
based on the novel of the same name by the Japanese author
Kobo Abe. A production of the Centro Coreográfico de
León. Choreography by Barbara García. Original
music by composers from Catalonia and León (July, 2002).
A concert will be given by Bill Wymans Rhythm Kings
in front of the Botines building, Plaza San Marcelo (July
1st Gaudí Festival of Improvised Music. Following the
innovative spirit of the Catalan architect, this proposal
has great value for its novelty and quality. Renowned international
figures of the European panorama such as Peter Kowald, Le
Quan Ninh, Agustí Fernández, and the group Sin
Red will participate, and there will be various conferences
and seminars (July 2002).
Inauguration of the Festival of Contemporary Spanish Music
in the new Auditorium of León, held by the Orquesta
de Cámara Ibérica. The program, entitled Spanish
music about Gaudí, will be an homage to the architect.
Antonio José (Suite Ingenua para cuerdas y piano);
Jordi Cervelló (Burlesca ibérica); Amando Blanquer
(Concierto para fagot y cuerdas); Evaristo Fernández
Blanco (Suite para cuerdas), and Eduardo Toldrá (Vistas
al mar evocaciones poéticas) will participate
(From July 1st to 12th, 2002).
The links between Gaudís architecture and a certain
spirituality and religiousness are well known. This has brought
about the proposal of a series of concerts with the idea of
situating itself between mysticism and the coexistence of
Sufí, Sephardic, Mozarabic, and Medieval Isorhythmic
musical and dance groups, etc.; Amancio Prada will present
his work Singing to Saint John of the Cross. As well as the
popular rai, an expression of crossbreeding in the current
Arab world, with its exaltation of dancing, pleasure, eroticismdefinitively,
of heaven on earth (Cheb Khaled, Cheb-Mami).
Summer courses at the University: This year, the University
of León wanted to be sensitive to the celebration of
Gaudí Year and has prepared, within its habitual summer
courses, various ones dedicated to the figure of the architect
from Reus, as well as different presentations by specialists
on Gaudí (León-Astorga in July and August, 2002).
Summer courses at Centro de los Oficios: This school, which
belongs to the León City Hall, has adapted its summer
courses to the different architectural works and craft, building,
and decorative elements created by Gaudí.
Conferences given by specialists on subjects regarding restoration
and architecture with reference to the works of Gaudí.
Francisco Azconegui, Mónica M. Sisí, Oriol Conesa,
Enrique Rabasa, Agustín Castellanos, Fernando de Olaguer-Feliú,
and Mariano Díez Sáenz de Miera will participate.
Week of Mystic Gastronomy: This proposal seeks to provide,
with the collaboration of various restaurants of León,
a taste of the dishes made in cloistered convents.
The veteran company La Danaus, of León, will take advantage
of the context of the anniversary of Gaudís birth
to show its latest work: Danaidae. In it, street theater is
mixed with video, music, special effects, and plastic images
as narrative elements (Astorga: August; León: September,
León Gaudí 2002 will accommodate various exhibits:
Exploring form. Space, Geometry, Structure, and Construction,
organized by the Barcelona City Hall and the Sociedad Estatal
de Acción Cultural Exterior (October, 2002).
Fundación Vela Zanetti will hold a photography exhibit
on the work carried out at Sagrada Familia by Subirachs, relating
it to his work on La Virgen del Camino.
Also, there will be other private productions, which will
seek to provide a sample of the creation of the most relevant
artists of León.
