The Ayuntamiento de León has brought together the efforts of other local, provincial, and regional institutions such as the Ayuntamiento de Astorga, the Universidad de León, the Diputación Provincial, the Junta de Castilla y León, the Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos de León, as well as the contributions of various artists and professionals from the province’s cultural areas, in order to join in the commemoration of the 150th anniversary of Gaudí’s birth.
With this spirit, the program León Gaudí 2002 seeks to contribute a lively, eloquent project with the creativity belonging to the environment of León. For this purpose, dreaming has been chosen as a poetic reference, a metaphor drawing together the homage to the figure of Gaudí, summarized by the title Dreaming in Stone.
Among the proposals developed, the following stand out:

Publications
The publishing of the book Soñando en Piedra (Dreaming in Stone), a compilation of new texts and photographs, reflecting on the two buildings that Gaudí designed in León –the Episcopal Palace of Astorga and Casa Botines. The authors of the texts are Antonio Gamoneda, Manuel Arias, María Jesús Alonso Gavela, Antoni González Moreno-Navarro, Bernardino González, and Manuel Carriedo. The photographs are by Andrés Edo, Blanca Giganto, Manuel Tejada López, Rafael García Salas, Santiago Santos Vega, and Amando Casado Martínez.
(The presentation of this book, on April 18th in Astorga and León, along with the showing of the film Gaudí, by Manuel Huerga, will be the inaugural act of the program León Gaudí 2002).
The Feria del Libro (Book Fair) of León will make special reference to the figure of Gaudí, dedicating a special stand at the fair and various activities to him (end of April, 2002).

Cinema / Video
Production of an audiovisual project about both buildings, under the auspices of the Colegio de Arquitectos de León (simultaneously projected in Astorga and León in October, 2002).
Melquiades Ranilla is the coordinator of the project; production by Chus Domínguez with the collaboration of the Escuela de Cinematografía de Ponferrada. The advisors are Mariano Díez Sáenz de Miera, Félix Compadre, and Ramón Cañas.
Open-air cycle of cinema and architecture around Casa Botines. Proposal: Joaquín Revuelta (film critic).

Dance
La mujer de arena (The Sand Woman) is a modern dance piece, based on the novel of the same name by the Japanese author Kobo Abe. A production of the Centro Coreográfico de León. Choreography by Barbara García. Original music by composers from Catalonia and León (July, 2002).
Music
A concert will be given by Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings in front of the Botines building, Plaza San Marcelo (July 27, 2002).
1st Gaudí Festival of Improvised Music. Following the innovative spirit of the Catalan architect, this proposal has great value for its novelty and quality. Renowned international figures of the European panorama such as Peter Kowald, Le Quan Ninh, Agustí Fernández, and the group “Sin Red” will participate, and there will be various conferences and seminars (July 2002).
Inauguration of the Festival of Contemporary Spanish Music in the new Auditorium of León, held by the Orquesta de Cámara Ibérica. The program, entitled “Spanish music about Gaudí”, will be an homage to the architect. Antonio José (Suite Ingenua para cuerdas y piano); Jordi Cervelló (Burlesca ibérica); Amando Blanquer (Concierto para fagot y cuerdas); Evaristo Fernández Blanco (Suite para cuerdas), and Eduardo Toldrá (Vistas al mar– evocaciones poéticas) will participate (From July 1st to 12th, 2002).

Music and Spirituality:
The links between Gaudí’s architecture and a certain spirituality and religiousness are well known. This has brought about the proposal of a series of concerts with the idea of situating itself between mysticism and the coexistence of different religions.
Sufí, Sephardic, Mozarabic, and Medieval Isorhythmic musical and dance groups, etc.; Amancio Prada will present his work Singing to Saint John of the Cross. As well as the popular rai, an expression of crossbreeding in the current Arab world, with its exaltation of dancing, pleasure, eroticism–definitively, of heaven on earth (Cheb Khaled, Cheb-Mami).

Courses/Seminars/Conferences
Summer courses at the University: This year, the University of León wanted to be sensitive to the celebration of Gaudí Year and has prepared, within its habitual summer courses, various ones dedicated to the figure of the architect from Reus, as well as different presentations by specialists on Gaudí (León-Astorga in July and August, 2002).
Summer courses at Centro de los Oficios: This school, which belongs to the León City Hall, has adapted its summer courses to the different architectural works and craft, building, and decorative elements created by Gaudí.
Conferences given by specialists on subjects regarding restoration and architecture with reference to the works of Gaudí. Francisco Azconegui, Mónica M. Sisí, Oriol Conesa, Enrique Rabasa, Agustín Castellanos, Fernando de Olaguer-Feliú, and Mariano Díez Sáenz de Miera will participate.

Fundación Vela Zanetti will hold a photography exhibit on the work carried out at Sagrada Familia by Subirachs, relating it to his work on La Virgen del Camino.
Also, there will be other private productions, which will seek to provide a sample of the creation of the most relevant artists of León.
