MTV Europe Music Awards 2002

Palau Sant Jordi

Apart from its musical vitality, Gaudí’s architecture was one of the main factors that led Barcelona to become the location for celebrating the ninth MTV Europe Music Awards, which will be held in Spain for the first time. So, within the magnificent context of the celebration of Gaudí International Year, this prestigious competition will take place, adding its performances in Palau Sant Jordi to the different events programmed in honor of the anniversary of the architect’s birth.
Known as the “Music Oscars”, the MTV Europe Music Awards were created in 1994 to render homage to the music and artists admired by all Europeans. The awards were thought of as an international celebration of pop music and culture.
Barcelona thus joins other cities where this celebration has previously been held, such as Frankfurt, Stockholm, London, Paris, and Berlin, among others.
In the year 2000, the prize for the “Best Spanish Singer” was created, for which prestigious national groups such as Jarabe de Palo, Alejandro Sanz, La Oreja de Van Gogh, Dover, or Najwa Nimri have been nominated. Over the years, great artists such as Backstreet Boys, Madonna, Ricky Martin, REM, Britney Spears, Robbie Williams, Spice Girls, or U2 have performed on its different stages.
