The Modernist Medal

20.6.2001 - 29.9.2002
Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC)

During the Modernist era, medal art underwent a process of radical transformation thanks to its recovery as an artistic object by sculptors such as Arnau, Blay, Gargallo, Parera, or Llimona, Gaudí’s friend and collaborator, who made it into an important field of experimentation.
In the context of Catalonia, this phenomenon presented its own, well-defined lines of evolution, which gave, as a result, pieces of peculiar beauty.
The present exhibit seeks to show the main characteristics of Catalan Modernist medals, comparing them with European and Spanish medals of the same period.
